Littmann Replacement Parts: Ear Tips, Diaphragms and Bell Sleeves

Short answer: The main Littmann replacement parts are snap-tight soft-sealing eartips, tunable diaphragms and non-chill bell sleeves or rims. Replace eartips when they harden, crack or no longer seal, and replace a diaphragm when it is cracked, warped or loose in its rim. Always match the part to your exact model and chestpiece size, because a Classic III, a Cardiology IV and a Master Cardiology do not all use the same diaphragm.

Which Littmann parts can be replaced?

A Littmann stethoscope is built to last for years, and the warranty reflects that: 5 years on the Classic III and 7 years on the Cardiology IV and Master Cardiology. The parts that touch skin or take daily pressure wear faster than the chestpiece and tubing, so Littmann sells them separately.

Part What it does Signs it needs replacing
Snap-tight soft-sealing eartips Seal the ear canal to block outside noise and deliver sound comfortably Hardened, cracked, discoloured, sticky, or no longer snapping firmly onto the headset
Tunable diaphragm Picks up low- or high-frequency sounds depending on how firmly you press Cracks, warping, a loose rim, or a dull sound compared with before
Non-chill bell sleeve / rim Gives a warmer, more comfortable seal on the skin; on the Classic III pediatric side it turns the chestpiece into a traditional open bell Cracked, stretched or lost; poor seal on the skin

You can find original parts in our Littmann replacement parts category. We sell only original, new Littmann products, so the parts are made to the same specifications as the ones fitted at the factory.

Littmann ear tips: when and why to replace them

Eartips do more for sound quality than most people expect. If they no longer seal, ambient noise leaks in and faint sounds become harder to hear, even on a premium cardiology model. Many users also swap the eartips simply for comfort, since soft-sealing eartips are designed to sit gently in the ear during long shifts.

Good reasons to replace them include visible cracks, material that has become hard or sticky, an eartip that pops off when you put the headset on, or one that has been lost. Eartips are also the most personal part of a stethoscope, so a fresh set makes sense if you buy a used stethoscope or pass yours on.

Diaphragms and bell sleeves: check compatibility with your model

Diaphragms are not universal across the range. Match the part to your model name and to the chestpiece size you need to replace:

  • Classic III: two tunable sides, an adult side of about 4.3 cm and a pediatric side of about 3.4 cm. The pediatric side can be converted to a traditional open bell by replacing its diaphragm with the non-chill bell sleeve.
  • Cardiology IV: two tunable sides, adult and pediatric, on a stainless steel chestpiece.
  • Master Cardiology: one tunable side on a stainless steel chestpiece of about 5.1 cm.
  • Classic II Pediatric and Classic II Infant: smaller chestpieces (diaphragm about 3.4 cm and about 2.8 cm respectively), so they need parts in matching sizes.

Before you order, check the model engraved on your chestpiece and read the compatibility listed on the part. If you are unsure which model you own, the serial number and markings on the chestpiece will tell you, and our Littmann buyer’s guide shows how the models differ.

How to change Littmann eartips and a diaphragm

  1. Remove the old eartips. Grip the eartip firmly and pull it straight off the end of the headset tube.
  2. Fit the new eartips. Push each one onto the headset tube until it snaps into place. Point the eartips forward, toward your nose, when you put the headset on, so they follow the angle of your ear canals.
  3. Remove the diaphragm. Work the rim off the chestpiece with your fingers, starting at one edge. Avoid sharp tools that could scratch the chestpiece.
  4. Seat the new diaphragm. Place the diaphragm in its rim, then press the rim back onto the chestpiece evenly all the way round until it sits flush.
  5. Test it. Tap the diaphragm lightly while listening, then try light and firm pressure to confirm the tunable function works as before.

Caring for new parts so they last

Most parts wear out early because of the wrong cleaning products. Wipe the chestpiece, tubing and eartips with 70% isopropyl alcohol, and take the eartips off to clean them properly. Do not immerse the stethoscope in liquid or sterilize it, keep oils, lotions and solvents away from the tubing, and do not leave it in extreme heat or cold, such as on a car dashboard. Our Littmann cleaning and maintenance guide covers the full routine.

Frequently asked questions

What replacement parts are available for Littmann stethoscopes?

Littmann sells snap-tight soft-sealing eartips, tunable diaphragms and non-chill bell sleeves or rims as replacement parts. Always choose parts that match your exact model and chestpiece size.

How often should I replace Littmann ear tips?

Replace Littmann eartips when they harden, crack, become sticky or no longer snap firmly onto the headset. A poor seal lets outside noise in and makes faint sounds harder to hear.

Are Littmann diaphragms interchangeable between models?

No. Classic III, Cardiology IV, Master Cardiology and the Classic II Pediatric and Infant models use different chestpiece sizes, so check the model engraved on your chestpiece and the compatibility listed on the part.

How do I put new ear tips on a Littmann stethoscope?

Pull the old eartip straight off the headset tube, then push the new one on until it snaps into place. Wear the headset with the eartips pointing forward, toward your nose.

How do I clean Littmann eartips?

Remove the eartips from the headset and wipe them with 70% isopropyl alcohol. Do not immerse the stethoscope in liquid or sterilize it.
