Short answer: most nurses, medical students and paramedics are best served by the Littmann Classic III (5-year warranty). Doctors who assess heart sounds every day should choose the Cardiology IV or Master Cardiology (7-year warranty), and clinicians who work in noisy wards or need recordings should consider the CORE Digital. Stethoscope24 is an authorised Solventum Littmann dealer: every stethoscope is new and genuine, ships across the EU in 1–3 working days, ships free on EU orders over €99 and can be returned within 30 days.

Littmann models compared
All current Littmann stethoscopes are made by Solventum, the healthcare company that 3M spun off in 2024. The models, acoustics and warranty terms did not change with the new name.
| Model | Chestpiece | Tubing | Best for | Warranty |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Classic III | Dual-sided, tunable diaphragm, adult + paediatric side | Single lumen | Nurses, students, GPs, paramedics | 5 years |
| Cardiology IV | Dual-sided, stainless steel, tunable on both sides | Dual lumen | Physicians, ICU, emergency, cardiology | 7 years |
| Master Cardiology | Single-sided, solid stainless steel, includes paediatric adaptor | Dual lumen | Cardiologists who prefer a single head | 7 years |
| CORE Digital | Analog + digital, up to 40× amplification, active noise cancellation | Dual lumen | Noisy settings, recordings, hearing loss, teaching | 2 years |
| Classic II Paediatric / Infant | Small dual-sided chestpiece, non-chill rim | Single lumen | Paediatric wards, NICU, maternity | 3 years |
| Lightweight | Light dual-sided chestpiece | Single lumen | Blood-pressure checks, care assistants, home care | 2 years |
In Littmann’s own comparison chart the Classic III has an acoustic rating of 7 and the Cardiology IV a rating of 9, and the Classic III is lighter (about 150 g against 177 g). Dual-lumen tubing runs two sound channels inside one tube, so the two channels don’t rub against each other and add noise.
The best Littmann for your profession
Nurses and nursing students
The Classic III covers ward assessments, blood pressure and lung sounds, and its tubing resists skin oils and alcohol over long shifts. Read how nurses use it in practice in our 12-hour-shift review. Nurses in critical care or cardiology often move up to the Cardiology IV.
Medical students
The Classic III is enough for the pre-clinical and clinical years. Students who already know they want internal medicine, cardiology or emergency medicine often buy a Cardiology IV once, because it will last through residency. See our medical student buying guide.
Doctors, ICU and emergency
The Cardiology IV is the standard choice for physicians who need to hear quiet murmurs, gallops and subtle lung sounds. In loud resuscitation rooms the CORE Digital’s amplification and noise cancellation make a measurable difference. More in the emergency medicine guide.
Paramedics
Paramedics need a robust, easy-to-clean instrument that works in vehicles and outdoors. The Classic III is the most common choice; the Cardiology IV gives more margin in noisy environments. See what paramedics actually need.
Paediatrics and neonatal care
The Classic II Paediatric and Classic II Infant have smaller chestpieces that seal well on small chests. The Master Cardiology includes an adaptor for paediatric use. See the paediatrics and PICU guide.
Veterinarians
Vets typically choose a Classic III for small animals and a Cardiology IV or CORE Digital for cardiac work and larger animals. Read the veterinary guide.
Classic III vs Cardiology IV: is the upgrade worth it?
Choose the Cardiology IV if you auscultate the heart many times a day, work in a noisy environment or want one stethoscope for a whole medical career. Choose the Classic III if you mainly take blood pressure and do general assessments, or if weight and price matter more. The Cardiology IV has a higher acoustic rating, dual-lumen tubing, a stainless steel chestpiece with a larger diaphragm and a 7-year warranty instead of 5. See the full Classic III vs Cardiology IV comparison.
Cardiology IV vs Master Cardiology
Both have 7-year warranties and dual-lumen tubing. The Cardiology IV is dual-sided, with a separate paediatric side. The Master Cardiology is single-sided, so there is nothing to rotate, and it comes with an adaptor for paediatric and procedural use. Choose by how you like to hold and use the chestpiece.
Is the Littmann CORE Digital worth it?
It is worth it if you work in loud settings, have reduced hearing, teach, or need to record and share sounds. It amplifies up to 40 times, cancels background noise, switches between analog and digital listening, and connects to the Eko app for waveforms and recordings. If you never need amplification, a Cardiology IV gives similar everyday performance without batteries.
How to spot a fake Littmann
Littmann counterfeits are common on marketplaces and classified sites. Littmann’s own anti-counterfeit guidance recommends:
- Buying from an authorised dealer. See our authentication page.
- Being suspicious of prices that look too good to be true and of sellers with few reviews or little stock.
- Checking several signs together (packaging, finish, logo, how the chestpiece and eartips fit), because no single sign is conclusive.
A fake stethoscope can sound worse, break sooner and has no manufacturer warranty.
Warranty by model and how to claim it
Littmann warranties run from the date of purchase: Cardiology IV and Master Cardiology 7 years, CORE Digital 2 years, Classic III 5 years, Classic II Paediatric and Infant 3 years, Lightweight 2 years. Keep your invoice: it is your proof of purchase from an authorised dealer. Contact us and we will help with any claim.
Colour, finish and engraving
Colour does not change the sound, but finishes such as Black Edition, Smoke, Mirror, Rainbow and Champagne are popular because they are easy to recognise on a busy ward. We can add your name with laser engraving so your stethoscope does not get mixed up with colleagues’.
Cleaning and care
Wipe the chestpiece and tubing with 70% isopropyl alcohol, never immerse the stethoscope in liquid and keep it away from heat and oils. Replace eartips and diaphragms when they wear. You’ll find spare parts here and step-by-step instructions in our cleaning and maintenance guide. To get the most from the tunable diaphragm, read how to use Tunable Technology.
Frequently asked questions
Which Littmann is best for nursing students?
The Littmann Classic III. It covers everything nursing students need on placement, it has a 5-year warranty, and its dual-sided chestpiece works on adults and children.
Is the Classic III enough for medical school?
Yes. The Classic III is sufficient for medical school. Students heading for cardiology, internal or emergency medicine often choose the Cardiology IV so they don’t need to upgrade during residency.
Is the Cardiology IV much better than the Classic III?
For cardiac auscultation, yes: it has a higher acoustic rating in Littmann’s chart (9 against 7), dual-lumen tubing and a 7-year warranty. For blood pressure and general assessments, the Classic III is fully adequate.
What is dual-lumen tubing?
Two separate sound channels inside one tube, one for each ear. Because the channels don’t rub against each other, there is less background noise. Cardiology IV, Master Cardiology and CORE Digital have it.
Are Stethoscope24’s Littmann stethoscopes genuine?
Yes. Stethoscope24 is an authorised Solventum Littmann dealer. Every stethoscope is new, genuine and covered by the full manufacturer warranty.
How fast is delivery in the EU?
EU orders ship by insured express delivery and arrive in 1–3 working days. Shipping is free on EU orders over €99. Details are on the shipping and returns page.
Can I return a stethoscope?
Yes. Unused products can be returned within 30 days.
Is the CORE Digital good for everyday use?
Yes. It works as a normal analog stethoscope and switches to digital amplification when you need it, so many clinicians use it as their only stethoscope.
