Littmann Stethoscope Cardiology IV Black / Black Finish / Blue Stem Review
A stethoscope is essential to listen to the lungs and heart and identify the problem with different kinds of patients. As heart murmurs and other abnormal heart sounds can only be detected when a stethoscope is used. So I needed one with exceptional qualities to fulfill all of my requirements which is why I opted for Littmann Cardiology IV.
Let’s start with the unboxing first. On the front of the box, it has got a Littmann logo and then a picture of the stethoscope chest piece. Then on the backside, it has some information about the stethoscope in 7 different languages.
On the side of the box, different features of the Littmann stethoscope are mentioned. Some of them are:
- It is easy to clean.
- It has outstanding acoustic performance.
- It comes with a single-piece tunable diaphragm which allows better audibility of high-frequency sounds.
- It has next-generation longer-life tubing.
As I take the stethoscope out of the box, I won’t be needing the box again. Even then, I prefer saving the boxes just in case I need them in the future for any purpose like the serial number perhaps?
Along with the stethoscope, an instruction manual, spare parts kit, and a non-chill rubber rim are also included but as the stethoscope is the main part so I’ll just start with checking out its new features.

The stethoscope has dual-lumen tubing which means that it has two separate channels, one for the right ear and one for the left ear which allows for less interference with rubbing noises and enhances the acoustics.
The ergonomic headset is perfect for my head. The Littmann ear tips are great. I like them because they are soft in my ears but at the same time, they are firm enough to create a good seal that blocks out the outside noises. They are push-on and pull-on so they won’t just fall off easily during work.
It has a moveable diaphragm and can be used for both pediatric and adult patients. The non-chill rubber rim can be used to convert the pediatric side into an open bell. I also chose the Blue stem as I like the combination of that bright color with Black.
It is easy to lose the stethoscope during work hours when I am too busy and concerned with different patients. So I got my name engraved on the tube of the stethoscope. It looks very cool. Mentioning the tube, I love this A-frame feature of the Littmann Stethoscope Cardiology IV.
However, the length of the tube is not very ideal. This tubing is around 69 cm. If I wasn’t so picky with the length of the stethoscope, it would not have been a problem but I prefer longer ones as that way I don’t have to get in the face of my patients while checking them with the stethoscope.
To test the features of this stethoscope, I tested it on my husband. First I placed the chest piece on the pulmonary region and then also checked some breath sounds as well. His chest sounds clear.

Pros and Cons:
Pros:
- Dual-lumen tubing
- Acoustics are great
- Dual diaphragm
- Includes the spare parts kit
Cons:
- Shorter sized tube
- Expensive
Comparison with competitors:
The Edelstahl stethoscopes have good quality as well, but if I compare the acoustics, then I prefer the Littmann Stethoscope Cardiology IV as it has dual-lumen tubing and this feature greatly enhances the sound transmission.
Another factor is that they do have a longer tube as I require. But the Littmann has other exceptional qualities for which I am ready to let go of this one disadvantage.
Furthermore, I noticed that the tubing can get tinted from the scrubs or, in some cases, if I stored them in a bag, along with other things. They get tinted, and then the color doesn’t come off. So I highly recommend using the Littmann Cardiology IV as with the black-colored tubing you don’t have to worry about it getting tinted.
