Littmann Stethoscope Cardiology IV Black / Rainbow / Black Stem Review
I’ve been a fan of the Littmann stethoscopes for a very long time ever since I first learned about their potential and acoustic features. My previous stethoscope got stolen which is why I was looking to buy a new stethoscope and as soon as I got across the Littmann Cardiology IV stethoscope, I was impressed by the range of features the stethoscope offers. I decided to buy it. From the available options, I chose the Black tubing with the Black stem and the rainbow-finished chest piece to give the stethoscope a bit of a spark.
Let me describe the design of the stethoscope. Littmann has employed nicely machined stainless steel in the stethoscope’s chest piece and a light yet durable aluminum headset, is also added.
The tight fit and solid connections between the rubber parts and the stem of the chest piece improve the metal components. When the chest piece of the Littmann Cardiology IV is seated in either position, the rotating stem produces a noticeable click. Once it clicks, the stem is firmly in place, eliminating any possibility of slipping out of the desired position.

Additionally, the headset of the stethoscope has ear tips that seal softly and securely. These soft rubber tips seal beautifully in my ears, as they have in previous versions, and do a good job of separating the sounds I’m wanting to hear. I frequently have to take my stethoscope off to hear other people speaking around me which is a good sign and proof of the outstanding acoustics.
This stethoscope has a tunable diaphragm and provides both features in a single chest piece. One side has the larger-sized adult diaphragm and the other has a smaller size for pediatric patients.
The pediatric side of this stethoscope can easily be changed into an open bell using the provided option. This stethoscope regularly produces excellent sounds, and both cardiac and pulmonary sounds are enjoyable to hear. In patients with severe adventitious breath sounds, I can still detect an apical pulse with this and, in many instances, can cut through the excessive respiratory noises to detect strong cardiac valve noises.
Even when I am working in a noisy environment, the ear tips provide me with a great seal and the perfect sound sensibility offers the right performance that captures even the subtlest of sounds.
Overall, this stethoscope has my highest recommendation but I do not like the fact that the stethoscope with a cost of around £208 doesn’t come with a free case or a free engraving option. I had to pay separately for both of these.

Pros and Cons:

- High-frequency acoustics
Cons:
- Expensive
- The hard case and engraving are not included in the purchase.
Competition with others:
When compared to the qualities of the Littmann Cardiology IV, the Bjorn Hall stethoscope also comes with great acoustics but is not as good as the Littmann stethoscope. This stethoscope picks up murmurs or abnormal sounds in a better and clearer way.
Moreover, I do not like the feel of the tubing with the Bjorn Hall stethoscope. It feels a bit rough. On the other hand, the Littmann Cardiology IV has flexible, thick, and dual-lumen tubing.
The material of the headset also looks a bit low quality. I have to adjust it every time I use it which is time taking and irritating when I’m busy and hundreds of patients are waiting for me.
An advantage I noticed with the Bjorn Hall stethoscope is that It does come with a free case but I am not impressed with the design of that case as well. But the Littmann stethoscope requires an extra £25 for the hard case. After going through all of these points, I prefer the Littmann Cardiology IV stethoscope over the Bjorn Hall stethoscope.
